Every winter season, garages are high risk areas for accidents at home. Most of these accidents are caused by unexpected slips and falls where the person who gets out of the car inside the garage is the victim. Falls that happen inside a garage are potentially very dangerous since the floor is usually made of plain concrete which is a very hard surface. Over the past few years, a lot of municipalities have passed laws that require bicycle riders to wear helmets because of the amount of damage they can receive if they have an accident on the road. This same thing can happen if you accidentally slip and your head hits the garage floor. This includes the risk of having brain damage so the possibility of slips and falls must be eliminated.
The most recommended way to make your garage safer is by applying an anti-slip garage floor sealant. It has two significant benefits. First of all, it provides better traction even if the floor is slick and wet. Secondly, it gives protection to the floor against damages such as chipping. The steps to applying a garage floor sealer are really easy to follow and they need two half days to be completed if you are the only one who’s going to do it. The most popular and most effective sealant to use is epoxy because this material becomes very hard as it cures. It is also very easy to apply its non-slip additive before it completely cures.
Epoxies are composed of two parts which are called the resin and the hardener. Once the surface of the floor is prepared, these two liquid ingredients are mixed well together and then the mixture is rolled out on the floor. A nap paint roller is used for this step. After the floor is coated, the non-slip additive should be spread over the top. The additive is actually a gritty material such as sand but it is not recommended to use beach sand since it has a high salt content. The tiny grains of the sand serve as little gripper so it is almost impossible for your feet to slip out from under you even if there is rain water trickling on an oil spot.
Once summer time comes, this is the best time to make some improvements on your garage floor to make it safer for winter days.
