Hampers were not common things to be given as presents in days gone by but hamper giving is quite a bit more frequent now. When I was young I vividly remember a hamper I received from a rich Aunt after I had been in hospital for a spell. It was a chocolate hamper and my eyes went out on stalks when I first saw it. Chocolate was a rarity in our household and to receive such a bounty was amazing. The hamper was not so big in reality but for a child like me it seemed enormous. It had small chocolate bars made from Swiss and German chocolate. Swiss chocolate was reputed to be the best chocolate in the world at the time. The bars were individually wrapped and placed in a small wicker basket. The hamper basket was lined with the softest tissue paper I have ever known. The paper was an off white color and the small chocolate bars with their brightly colored wrappers contrasted so well with the crumpled paper. The present reminded me of a bird’s nest with all the chocolate pieces representing the eggs. My amazement was complete when I opened the wrapping of one small bar to find the chocolate was colored red. I had seen white, dark and milk chocolate before but never red and like all the other bars it tasted great too.

Hampers today
Chocolate hampers now have so many different things that can be added that were not available years ago. Chocolate straws can be so fine today and layered with both white and dark chocolate in a marble effect. Also new are chocolate milk drinks in bottles of various sizes. Chocolate bars now originate in countries worldwide and the chocolate has so many embellishments like nougat, honey, fruit and nuts combined in the chocolate manufacturing process. White, dark and milk chocolates have been superseded by chocolate of any color desirable.
