There are legitimate paid surveys available for the taking, but the difficulty can be in finding them. Large corporations more than make back their money when people get paid for online surveys.
Taking surveys for money is not something you will probably plan your retirement around, but if you are able to find some and you are willing to put in the short amount of time required to complete surveys as requested, it can be a supplemental income, and that helps out. I personally wouldn’t expect to see huge checks like some sites promise, but if I was going to just be watching TV anyway, I’ll take the survey and the check thanks!
