One of the drawbacks of all the technology available today is the fact that sometimes it seems there is no privacy.  Well, there is at least one exception.  If you have ever been harrassed by unwanted, anonymous phone calls, it can sometimes be quite difficult to find out who is on the other end of the line.

The most difficult to track down are often cell phones because there is no central “phone book” where you can look numbers up.  You may be able to find a cell phone’s contact information in a directory that lists numbers which were voluntarily given, but your odds are not too great with this method.  I have personally dealt with this issue and did end up changing my phone number.

To get results, you may have to just pony up a few bucks and pay for a service provided by businesses like Reverse Phone Detective.  They specialize in finding cell phone numbers and unlisted telephone number information.

It can be scary and frustrating when you are dealing with someone who is acting like a jerk and using the telephone to torture you.  Check with your phone company, but when it happened to me, I was told to press *57 right after ending the call (1157 on a rotary phone) to activate a trace of the number.  The information collected has to be subpoenaed before anyone can actually see it (at least in my state).  If you feel threatened, inform the police and follow their instructions.
